What is Low VOC Paint?

08/13/18

In shopping for new paints for your residence or business, you may have seen or heard the term “low VOCs”. But what exactly are VOCs and why are they considered harmful? The more you know about the dangers of VOCs, the better-informed decision you can make about which paints to choose.

What are VOCs?
Standing for Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs are organic in nature and have a high vapor pressure under standard room temperatures. In other words, their boiling point is so low that they evaporate into the air at temperatures that are considered comfortable to the occupants. In paints, VOCs are found in solvents that include aliphatic hydrocarbons, acetone, ethyl acetate, or glycol ethers.

While VOCs exist in various chemical compounds that are both man-made and natural, there are some which may damage the health of human beings. While such VOCs are not toxic to the point of causing an immediate reaction, their real damage comes over long-term exposure. The good news is that we are starting to see a shift away from paints that incorporate compounds that include VOCs, but the process is only in the early stages.

Effects of VOCs
The effects on the human body may be considerable depending on the length of the exposure and the amount that is inhaled over time. While VOCs were known to be in paint products for decades, until recently it was believed that they stayed locked into the paint after it dried. Today, it is now known that VOCs will still leak into the air in small amounts which can build up inside rooms, homes, and buildings.

The effects range from nausea, dizziness, and irritations of the eye to more serious complications, especially for those with respiratory issues such as asthma. In rare cases, long-term exposure may lead to damage to the lung and kidneys and cause certain forms of cancer. What is most disturbing is that many of the symptoms might be overlooked and blamed on causes other than the presence of VOCs.

If you suspect that your home, office, or facility is painted with a product that contains VOCs, you should search out products that have low to no VOCs present. By removing and adding low VOC paint, you are substantially reducing the risk of illness or injury to those who live or work inside. Even low VOC paint only emits a fraction of the volatile organic compounds of traditional paints which means that those inside are considerably safer.
