Low VOC Floor Paint

5/17/2017
The floor in your home or business is a big part of the investment in the home or business itself. The better you can protect the floor, the better it will protect the value during it operation and upon potential sale. Traditional floor sealers and paints do an excellent job of extending the life and protecting the floor from impacts, spills, and stains.

In your search for the right product, one aspect to keep in mind is the toxic or volatile organic compound (VOC) component. Most paints and sealers come with VOCs which present a danger to those living in your household or working in your office or facility. Choosing a low VOC floor paint is essential to the health and wellbeing of those living or working inside.

The Danger of VOCs
For many decades, paints that were designed to protect floors contained petroleum-based chemicals such as polyurethane or VOCs. Over that time, it was believed that the VOCs in floor paint was harmless once it dried and hardened because it trapped the toxic components.

However, recent studies have shown that small amounts of VOCs leak out from the paints after drying. This means that in poorly ventilated rooms, the buildup of VOCs in the air may lead to health complications ranging from minor allergies to more serious respiratory issues and beyond. Left unchecked, the danger that VOC floor paints present, especially to babies and young children, should be great cause for concern.

The good news is that proper ventilation combined with using floor paints that have low amounts of VOCs will help prevent most health concerns associated with the toxins.

What is Low VOC Floor Paint?

This is floor paint that contains a low number of VOCs, which means that very little of the toxins are passed into the air after the product dries. While this does not fully prevent health issues from arising with those who are exposed over a long period, it does reduce the chances considerably. If the area is well-ventilated and the paint properly maintained, the low number of VOCs released will present little to no harm to those who are potentially exposed.

It should be noted that there are few floor paints that eliminate all VOCs or toxins simply because they work so well in protecting the floor better than any other material at a similar price. Still, choosing a low VOC floor paint product provides the same protection while keeping the costs reasonable so that you can protect your flooring with the proper care.

Some of the acrylic-based paints that contain little to no amounts of VOCs include AFM Safecoat Zero-VOC Paint, ECOs, and Mythic Paint. For those who want a non-acrylic option, BioShield, Milk Paint, and Romabio are also good options.

The experts at Hybrid Coating Technologies will help you find the right low VOC floor paint for your needs. They offer a solid selection of low VOC products and they can answer your questions so you can make the best-informed decision about which floor paint to choose.
