Is Polyurethane Safe? Learn Before You Buy!

As one of the most ubiquitous materials on the planet polyurethane has become immensely popular for it’s ability to endure the elements. You can find this substance in paints, foams, sealants, wheels, blades, adhesives, and hundreds of other products. But what is this material, why is it found in so many different products, and is it safe?

What is Polyurethane?
Polyurethane is a petroleum-based material that is a by-product of the oil industry. It can be found in liquid or solid form in countless products and is commonly used for paints, coatings, and sealants for wood, concrete, and other materials. It can also be used in foam form that makes it perfect for insulation, cushions, and stuffing for toys.

The reason polyurethane is so widely used is because of its inherent strength, versatility, and low cost. Polyurethane makes paints, coatings, and sealant more durable and resilient while in foam form it provides excellent insulation and is quite flexible.

Is Polyurethane Harmful?
For decades, concerns about polyurethane have mostly been downplayed because it was believed that the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) within were only released when the substance was in liquid form and being applied, such as a paint or coating. Those who apply the polyurethane-based products wear masks for protection. If the substance can be set on fire when in solid form, such as foam, fire-retardant chemicals are often mixed into the polyurethane which greatly reduces the danger on inhaling toxic fumes.

However, recent studies have discovered that the VOCs are still released into the atmosphere even after the substance has dried. While the amount released is relatively low, over time, in an indoor environment it can cause health issues for those with respiratory problems and allergic reactions. This means that for home and business owners who have polyurethane-based products applied to their walls, floors, and furnishings, there is a health danger that may be present.

The reason the VOCs are dangerous in an indoor environment is because the air is not dispersed as it is when outside. Because the VOCs become trapped inside, the amount present can grow over time until it begins to affect the health of those living or working in the home, business, or facility. If not addressed, the house or building will need the VOCs flushed out.  Additionally, the interior may need to be re-done to address the issue at its root by replacing old toxic products, paints and coatings.

What Is A Safe Alternative?
Since polyurethane’s safety is questionable it’s highly recommended you seek out alternative products that do the same thing while being environmentally sound. This is where Hybrid Coating Technologies comes in by offering “Green Polyurethane,” the most efficient and cost effective alternative to traditional polyurethane. The good news about the green products being offered by HCT is that they work like polyurethane, but with little to no VOCs, which means that the health risk is greatly lowered.

The products from Hybrid Coating Technologies are not only safe, but affordable which means that you can get the same protection while greatly reducing the danger to those who are inside.
