What is VOC Free Paint?

What is VOC Free Paint?
Decades ago, the dangers of lead paint created a new awareness of how the health of those living in residences and working in offices, warehouses, and facilities could be adversely affected by substances that most people took for granted.

Today, there is a growing awareness of the dangers presented by paint that contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and how they can adversely affect the health of those inside residences and businesses.

What are VOCs?
Volatile organic compounds are living substances that are emitted by certain gases and solids over time that may create a dangerous health situation for those inside buildings and structures. VOCs exist inside and outside buildings, residences, and structures, but the buildup is two to five times more substantial inside compared to outside where the winds disperse the toxic properties. Such gases and solids include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Paint, Paint Strippers, & Lacquers
  • Building Materials, Cleaning Supplies, & Furnishings
  • Permanent Markers, Adhesives, & Pesticides

Most of these materials contains VOCs in amounts that in and of themselves are not harmful in terms of short-term exposure. However, inside buildings and residences where the airflow is minimal, they can build up over time and present health risks. Only recently have organizations such as the EPA studied the long-term effects of VOCs and their conclusions center on using VOC free paint.
Health Hazards of VOCs

The EPA considers VOCs to be one of the leading hazards to human health caused by substances that infiltrate the air indoors. The symptoms of exposure to levels of VOCs considered hazardous include, but are not limited to the following;

  • Headaches, Dizziness, & Visual Disorders
  • Eye & Respiratory Health
  • Memory Impairment and More

These are the immediate symptoms that only grow worse over time. Considering that most people spend roughly 80% of their time indoors, the increased exposure only makes the symptoms worse. Add to this the challenges of those who work in paint or auto body shops where they receive a double-dose of exposure during the day and the issue of VOCs becomes even more apparent.

How VOC Free Paint Works

By using paints that have very low to no VOCs, the level of contamination inside rooms, residences, and commercial buildings is reduced considerably. Over several years, the amount of VOC remains at levels low enough where they cause little to no harm to the health of those living or working inside. It should be noted that VOCs exist around the world, but for the most part in levels low enough that the health of individuals are not affected.

By using paint that is free of VOCs, the quality of the indoor air is maintained and becomes far safer for those who must be inside for long periods. It is recommended that all painting indoors uses paint that is free of VOCs for the health of the individuals inside. VOC free paint significantly lowers the danger to the health and wellbeing for those living and working inside.
