Floor Paints for Concrete

Concrete provides a hardened surface for your building, warehouse, or facility that is durable and resistant to impacts and spills. However, the porous nature of concrete means that it can easily stain and be chipped away over time. The good news is that there are floor paints for concrete that create a non-porous surface which makes it even more resistant.

Effective paints and coatings for concrete are perfect for warehouses, auto shops, loading docks, or any surface that is exposed to a considerable amount of floor traffic or the elements. By extending the life of your concrete flooring, you are saving on potential repairs or even premature replacement which may cost considerably more than protecting the surface with the proper coating.

Paints for wood or other types of surfaces do not work on concrete precisely because of its porous nature, so it will start peeling away quickly. Paints designed for concrete will allow any moisture that is trapped inside to evaporate so that the applied product does not blister. There are different types of paints for concrete that have their unique attributes.

Water-based stains are designed to penetrate the concrete and produce a color change which will improve the overall appearance of the flooring itself. The blending of acrylic polymers along with pigments provides a strong layer of protection that resists staining and impacts that otherwise might chip away at the floor itself.

If you want to keep the natural appearance of the concrete or only make subtle changes, dyes that are tinted works quite well. They are low in cost, yet act like a sealer which prevents staining and chipping. You can choose from single-color dyes to translucent varieties depending on how you want the flooring to appear. A water-based dye will have more variety in the colors and provide a marbling effect while solvent-based dyes are uniform in their color application.

Arguably the most common method of protecting concrete is the use of sealers which fill up the porous surface. You can use them to color-correct the concrete to your liking while providing a solid layer of protection to the floor itself.

The floor must be prepared before a dye, stain, or sealer is added. This means having the floor thoroughly cleaned and stripped of any existing coatings. Once properly cleaned and stripped, the paint can be applied to the flooring for the desired result. The length of time it will take for the dye, stain, or sealer to take hold is usually a matter of hours depending on the size of the floor itself.

Non-Toxic Alternatives
You may notice that many floor paints for concrete contain Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC) and other toxic properties that over time may cause health issues for those who work inside the building or facility. The good news is that there are non-toxic alternatives that provide the same color, protection, and durability.
