For most businesses that deliver and receive shipments on a regular basis, the amount of punishment that their concrete flooring takes on a daily basis is considerable. This is also true for auto shops and any company that has heavy vehicular or foot traffic in their warehouses, storage rooms, and the like.

While concrete is one of the oldest and most robust of all types of flooring, it does have certain issues that allow for wear, stains, and aging to take hold. It does not take long for a concrete floor to show considerable wear and discoloration, especially if it is exposed to the elements.

This is where concrete floor coatings can make all the difference. A proper floor coating will address the weaknesses of concrete floors and provide ample protection for years.

The Weaknesses of Concrete Floors
There is little doubt that concrete is very durable, tough, and can withstand both foot and vehicular traffic considerably longer than most other materials. However, concrete does have some built-in weaknesses that causes it to age and discolor which makes it difficult to clean.

Porous: Concrete is essentially a mixture of rocks that has been crushed into very fine materials. During this process, air pockets develop that cause the material to become porous even when properly pressed. The porous nature of the concrete allows for it to be stained easily and discolored over time by collecting dirt, dust, and debris. Because these unwanted materials can penetrate the surface, that makes it difficult to clean.

Chipping: Although concrete can withstand weight and certain types of impacts better than most materials, it is subject to chipping when struck by hard, pointed objects. The chips and divots created weakens the flooring and makes for an uneven surface.

This is where concrete floor coatings come into play. This is a clear substance that covers the concrete floor and protects it from discoloration and chipping.

How Concrete Floor Coatings Address the Weaknesses
The floor coatings are made mostly from polyurethane and applied in a liquid form that hardens over time. The substance is clear and apart from a slight gloss and reflection may be difficult to spot. However, the thickness of the substance protects the concrete floor from staining, discoloration, and chipping.

This is because the coating fills in the tiny openings and cracks in the concrete so that it does not stain or suffer from the effects of aging. In addition, the thickness of the coating means that impacts from sharp, heaving objects like the corners of tool boxes for example, do not damage the concrete itself. This prevents chipping and keeps the flooring intact for many years.

In addition, all that is needed is light maintenance such as sweeping and occasional mopping of the floor coating itself.
