Concrete Floor Paint Ideas

Concrete floor paint offers a great way to create a new look for your garage, but there are other benefits it provides. Because concrete is a porous material, it can be easily stained and become discolored over the years without protection. The paint will cover the concrete and protect it from the spills, impacts, and age which means easier cleanups and fewer repairs. All you need are a few concrete floor paint ideas and you are ready to go.

Best Type
While it is true that floor paint is not as resilient as other types of coatings, you can get one that offers plenty of protections while adding color to the garage. The best type of paint is epoxy-based because it is far more durable compared to acrylic. Epoxy also resists mold and mildew which otherwise would penetrate the unprotected concrete.

However, the main reason why epoxy is far better than acrylic is its resistance to heat. That means when your hot tires come into contact with the paint, it will not peel as easily. However, it is recommended that you place mats or tire runners in the garage so that no contact is made.

Now that you have your type of paint, the next step is applying it to the floor. Here are a few ideas that will help you choose the right one for your needs.

Choose a Darker Color: If you can imagine what a garage looks like with the ceiling, walls, and floor all the same color, you’ll realize why choosing a darker one is better. If anything, a darker floor looks more natural and will help balance out the other colors in the area.

When in Doubt, Choose Dark Grey: Many people choose dark grey anyway because it is a similar color to concrete. This means that it will not be as jarring as many other color choices and may work best for your garage.

Protect the Paint: As mentioned above, tire runners or mats in the garage help prevent hot tire pickup of the paint. Additional mats for any floor traffic from the house or back door will also protect the paint, which will extend the value of your investment.

Clear the Garage: Before you start your painting project, be sure to clear your garage and keep the main door open when inside. This is because epoxy-based paints often have toxic properties that enter the air when it dries. You’ll want to wear a protective mask and keep the area well ventilated.
However, you may want to choose a non toxic paint instead as it offers additional advantages. Most notably that it will not continue to put toxins in the air even after it dries which may be an issue with some epoxy-based products.
